Frank Cristiano, President of Frankie’s Organic Snacks, explores how people, technology and product innovation are helping the family-owned business shape better-for-you snacking…
Frankie’s Organic Snacks has grown significantly in recent years. What have been the key lessons you’ve learned while scaling the business?
I think the most important lesson we’ve learned as a company is that our people matter the most. As much as manufacturing, innovation and strategy drive growth, none of it happens without the right team behind it. Building the right culture and surrounding ourselves with talented, passionate people has been the single biggest contributor to our success. Every person in our organization plays an important role – from our VP of Sales securing new retail partnerships, to our R&D team developing exciting products, to our quality assurance team maintaining our standards, and our machine operators ensuring every bag that leaves our facility meets our expectations. Everyone contributes to delivering on the promises we make to our customers.
What do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges facing the snacks industry today?
Consumers today are snacking more than ever before, so the market opportunity is tremendous. However, shoppers are now flooded with information about what to buy and they have more options than ever before, so the space is competitive. Consumers also have a particular set of demands–they want snacks that are healthy but tasty, delivered in a convenient format but with a long shelf life, and affordable while being made with high-quality ingredients. Manufacturers that can innovate quickly to meet these demands while maintaining consistently high quality and competitive pricing will be in the strongest position.
Consumer expectations are changing rapidly. Which trends are having the greatest influence on the way you develop new products?
One of our most exciting departments is product development. It’s the department my daughter, Angela, leads with her team. They love working with retail partners, for both the branded business and private label business, to create unique flavors as well as seasonal items. We’ve observed how today’s consumers are drawn to limited-edition products and exclusive “drops” that create excitement and give people a reason to try something new before it’s gone. We’ve embraced that trend by developing retailer-exclusive and limited-time products that generate buzz while still delivering the quality and flavor our customers expect.
While we do watch trends closely, we don’t want to chase fads. Developing and launching a product that tastes good and stays true to our brand takes time, so we’d rather focus on trends that have staying power in the aisle rather than focusing too heavily on short-lived moments. We’ve recently invested in new machinery to work with protein and fiber, as well as other fun innovations that we believe will have long-lasting influence.
Organic snacks have moved further into the mainstream. How do you see the category evolving over the next few years?
Organic has become much more mainstream over the past decade, and I think consumers now view it as table stakes; they expect to see organic options on their grocer’s shelf just like they expect other alternatives like gluten-free or high-protein choices. At the same time, organic alone isn’t enough. Shoppers are increasingly looking beyond the organic label and paying closer attention to ingredient quality, nutrition, transparency and how products fit into their everyday lifestyle. Beyond nutrition, consumers expect products that deliver on flavor, texture and affordability. The brands that can bring all those elements together will be the ones that achieve sustained growth.
Sustainability is becoming a greater priority across the food industry. Where do you think snack manufacturers can make the biggest impact?
Sustainability is a responsibility shared across the entire supply chain, and I think manufacturers have a real opportunity to lead by improving the way we operate. Whether it’s reducing food waste, improving production efficiencies, investing in energy-efficient equipment or optimizing packaging, small changes can have a meaningful impact at scale.
At Frankie’s, we believe sustainability means making smart, long-term decisions. Investing in modern manufacturing technology helps us reduce waste, improve efficiency and produce more with fewer resources. As the industry continues to evolve, I think the manufacturers that prioritize both environmental responsibility and operational excellence will be best positioned for the future.
