FAM STUMABO has nearly doubled its French fry blade manufacturing capacity following the opening of a third production facility, strengthening its ability to support potato processors seeking greater efficiency, consistent cutting quality and more diverse product formats.

The fully operational facility houses expanded hydrocutting blade operations, with investments in automated and semi-automated equipment designed to accommodate both high-volume manufacturing and specialised cutting requirements.

Meeting evolving processing demands

As French fry manufacturers look to differentiate their products beyond traditional straight-cut formats, demand for speciality shapes is creating new opportunities for innovation.

STUMABO’s hydrocutting portfolio includes more than 3,500 active blade types, with over 75 cutting dimensions for square-cut French fries alone. Its range also accommodates crinkle cuts, deep crinkle cuts, scoops, wedges and exclusive shapes developed for individual customers.

Alongside product differentiation, processors are increasingly focused on maximising yield, maintaining consistent cutting performance and reducing downtime through longer blade life and reliable replacement availability.

Bjorn Thumas, Business Development Director at FAM STUMABO, explained that manufacturers increasingly require solutions that improve operational efficiency while allowing them to respond to changing consumer preferences.

Expanding manufacturing flexibility

The investment includes additional automated capacity for high-volume blade production, alongside semi-automated manufacturing equipment for more specialised designs.

A new laser system, advanced forming machines and additional processing equipment have also been introduced. Beyond hydrocutting applications, the company has expanded production capabilities for circular and cross-cut blades used in industrial food processing machinery.

Founded in 1947, STUMABO combined its precision blade manufacturing expertise with FAM’s industrial cutting equipment capabilities in 1997.

Mark Van Hemelrijk, CEO of FAM STUMABO, described the expansion as an important milestone reflecting confidence in the French fry industry’s future.

The company plans further investment in hydrocutting blades and cutting heads, supporting continued development across conventional and speciality potato products.

Visitors can meet FAM STUMABO at Interpom in Kortrijk, Belgium, from 29 November to 1 December, in Hall 1, Stand 199.
