SOMIC Packaging will showcase new secondary packaging and digital service technology at PACK EXPO International, including its Eagle and Connect diagnostic systems and the North American debut of its SOMIC 202 platform.
The technology is aimed at manufacturers managing increasingly fast and format intensive packaging operations, with a focus on improving troubleshooting, flexibility and production uptime.
Seeing what happens before a stoppage
SOMIC Eagle uses multiple cameras positioned around critical areas of a case packer to record machine sequences when a fault occurs. The system can capture footage from approximately ten seconds before a stoppage and five seconds afterwards, allowing maintenance teams to examine how an issue developed rather than relying solely on a sensor generated fault code.
SOMIC Connect can then combine selected video with PLC and HMI logs and error information for secure sharing with service personnel. The system operates locally rather than requiring machinery to maintain a continuous connection to an external cloud service.
Flexible secondary packaging
The technology will be demonstrated on SOMIC’s 434 case packer, which can operate as a case packer, tray or wraparound system and process two piece cartons. The platform can achieve up to 32 cycles per minute and incorporates automatic format adjustments designed to increase production uptime.
SOMIC will also introduce its compact 202 platform to the North American market. Positioned as an entry level system for automated shelf ready packaging, the standard machine processes RSC cases or flat blanks at rates of up to 20 cartons per minute.
